Have ride sharing services led to an increase in traffic accidents here in Kentucky and across the nation? Before the existence of Uber, Lyft and other ride sharing services in Louisville fatal accidents nationally were at an all time low. Researchers from the University of Chicago and Rice University in Houston recently revealed data which shows a significant increase in traffic fatalities in the eight years since ride sharing companies began their rapid expansion.
“…ridesharing is associated with an increase of 2% to 3% in the number of motor vehicle fatalities and fatal accidents,” the authors of the study concluded.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provided information for the study which was used to evaluate the number of accidents per Vehicle Mile Traveled (VMT) in the past eight years since Uber and Lyft began expansion. In city after city the authors of the study found the number of accidents per VMT continue to rise. Uber and Lyft obviously dismissed the study as “deeply flawed.”

The detailed statistics provided by the NHTSA and analyzed during the study showed patterns in every major city of ride share operations reflecting an increase in the number of car accidents and fatal motor vehicle crashes.
