Always make an effort to remain visible to avoid a truck accident, especially when passing a commercial vehicle or semi tractor-trailer. As professional drivers truck drivers are trained, and are supposed, to constantly check the areas surrounding their vehicle at all times.
However, due to pressures of many on time deliveries and hours of service rules, truck drivers sometimes do not consider potential blind spots which make it difficult for them to see other vehicles with whom they see the road. For example, it is best to maintain at least 30 feet between you and a moving truck in front of you. The truck driver cannot see the area immediately behind the trailer and a safe distance allows you to anticipate slowing traffic ahead.
Try to avoid passing a commercial truck on the right side whenever possible. Most trucks have a larger blind spot on the passenger side of the truck. This is especially true in city driving scenarios. Large trucks must actually make a sweeping right hand turn and many accidents occur when a vehicle inadvertently moves up on the right as the truck is attempting a right hand turn.
The best option when passing is to use the left lane and pass the truck on the driver’s side of the rig. There is a bit of a blind spot over the driver’s left shoulder, so complete the pass and move back in front of the truck when you can see the truck’s bumper and headlamps in your rear view mirror.
